Good morning and a most blessed Thursday to you. This past week, we had a sermon on Deuteronomy, chapter 34. It's the final book in Deuteronomy. It's the final or final chapter in Deuteronomy. It's the final chapter of the Pentateuch, the writings of Moses, those first five books in the Bible.
And we see where Moses is commanded to go to the top of Mount Nebo. And as he ascends, and he is there at the top of Mount Nebo, the Lord shows him the entirety of the promised land, the land that God had promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that this would be the land for his chosen people. But Moses is not allowed to enter into the promised land. He is not allowed to enter in because he had sinned against God. He had been disobedient and did not obey God's will at the waters of Meribah.
And so while he gets to see the panoramic vista before him, he gets to see the promise before him. He does not get to enter it. In our time of devotion today, I want to look at another mountaintop and another promised land. We find this in the book of Revelation.
It is the Revelation that was given to John when he was on the island of Patmos. If you would, please open to Revelation, chapter 21. We're going to begin looking at verse nine, where John, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls of the seven last plagues, came and said to me, come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the lamb. And in the spirit, he carried me away to a great high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.
It has the glory of God and ir radiance, like a very rare jewel like Jasper, clear as crystal. Look with me, please. Beginning at verse 22, I saw no temple in the city. For its temple is the Lord God, the Almighty, and the lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it.
For the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the Kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day, and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. Look with me, please.
Now at the last chapter of the book of Revelation, where John continues to describe what he sees. The river of life that flows, beginning in verse one, chapter 22. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life, with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face and his name will be on their foreheads, and there will be no more night. They need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. Moses was not allowed to enter into the promised land that had been promised to his forefathers.
But when he died, he was allowed to enter into the promise of eternity, because his sins and the sins of all this world, past, present and future, have been, have been owned and taken by Christ, the second person of the Trinity. Jesus Christ took all of our sins, all of Moses sins, all of the sins of those that are yet to come. He took them all upon himself as he hung on that cross. And he rose victorious over all of our sins. And so, as we read of this promised land, we are receiving that vista, that panoramic view of the promise that is to come for you and for I, and for all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
By our sin, we are separated from God, but by gods own grace and mercy. We get to see the promise, and we get to enter into the promise, not because of what we will do or have done, but because God is good and gracious and merciful. And for this, we give him glory and honor and thanks and praise. I am in no rush to get to the promised land. But I can tell you that knowing that that promised land is there, that that promised land is for you and for I and all who believe it gives me great hope and great comfort, because I know that I will be in the full presence of the Lord, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with all the saints fore ever and ever.
And that is very good news. Lets pray. Heavenly Lord, we thank you so much for your grace. We thank you for being the atonement for our sin. We thank you for claiming us, your church, as your bride, and for making us ready to be with you for all of eternity.
Lord, as we enter into this weekend, let this good news be upon our lips as we see others, as we have conversation with others and use us to share your words so that there may be more and more in this holy city, this city to come, the promised land that they too would be u living eternally in the promise of your presence, Lord, we lift this to you in the holy and precious name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Have a wonderful rest of your week and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday. God bless.
